Kurt Vonnegut on the state of things:
My governments got a war on drugs. But get this: The two most widely abused and addictive and destructive of all substances are both perfectly legal.
One, of course, is ethyl alcohol. And President George W. Bush, no less, and by his own admission, was smashed or tiddley-poo or four sheets to the wind a good deal of the time from when he was 16 until he was 41. When he was 41, he says, Jesus appeared to him and made him knock off the sauce, stop gargling nose paint.
Other drunks have seen pink elephants.
And do you know why I think he is so pissed off at Arabs? They invented algebra. Arabs also invented the numbers we use, including a symbol for nothing, which nobody else had ever had before. You think Arabs are dumb? Try doing long division with Roman numerals.
Were spreading democracy, are we? Same way European explorers brought Christianity to the Indians, what we now call Native Americans.
How ungrateful they were! How ungrateful are the people of Baghdad today.
So lets give another big tax cut to the super-rich. Thatll teach bin Laden a lesson he wont soon forget. Hail to the Chief.
That chief and his cohorts have as little to do with Democracy as the Europeans had to do with Christianity. We the people have absolutely no say in whatever they choose to do next. In case you havent noticed, theyve already cleaned out the treasury, passing it out to pals in the war and national security rackets, leaving your generation and the next one with a perfectly enormous debt that youll be asked to repay.

I know no one here cares about Morrissey, but I thought i’d link to something I found today about a phenomenon I’d heard about awhile ago but had forgotten: a Latino obsession with Morrissey.
The most striking similarity, though, is Morrisseys signature beckoning and embrace of the uncertainty of life and love, something that at first glance might seem the opposite of macho Mexican music. But check it out: for all the machismo and virulent existentialism that Mexican music espouses, there is another sidea morbid fascination with getting your heart and dreams broken by others, usually in death. In fact, Morrisseys most famous confession of unrequited love, “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” (“And if a double-decker bus/Crashes into us/To die by your side/Would be a heavenly way to die”) emulates almost sentiment for sentiment Cuco Sanchezs torch song “Cama de Piedra” (“The day that they kill me/May it be with five bullets/And be close to you”).

Ever since my 9th grade art teacher (ostensibly, the one that transformed my career choice from marine biology to art/design) played The Endless Summer over and over during class the entire year, I’ve had a secret affinity for surf movies. Here’s the trailer for a new one by Stacy Peralta, he who brought you Dogtown & Z-boys. And it’s even about surfers from the 50’s. m|
Northwest Airlines is now Northeast.. pointing at least
Really great discussion on Northwest Airlines’ branding fuck-up. I’ve always loved NWA’s old logo, and since I haven’t flown in 2 years, I didn’t know it’d changed. What a bummer. And then they have the balls to flip the logo around so that the north-west facing arrow/compass pointer is pointing north-east on a plane. Rad.
