Macworld just slips in under your nose when you have a life

Because of my relatively new position as full-time parent, MacWorld Expo NY kind of took me by surprise. Among the new-fangled Apple-riffic items:

  1. 17″ iMac, $100 less than high-end iMac previous
  2. New .Mac services, basically a pay-version of iTools
  3. New iSync, iCal, iChat, iTunes software. iTunes at v3.
  4. iPods: 5,10&20gb models, 5gb $100 cheaper than before. Official Windows support.
  5. Jaguar: OSX 10.2, August 24. $130, which seems like a lot to me just for an upgrade.

I don’t like paying this much, either, but Jaguar seems like a big step forward toward a more mature OS. Whether it’s a full price update or a cheap-o upgrade is somewhat arbitrary anyhow. Didn’t they charge full price for the “upgrade” from 8.1 -> 8.5? And again for the “upgrade” from 8.6 -> 9.0?

  2. Next time, I’ll remember to bring some Paragraph tags over to the party.

  3. they did charge for those upgrades, but not as much if you were to buy it outright.

  4. Actually, kev, they did… its either up-to-date 19$ purchase (with receipt and those little proof of purchase cards that came with macs) or a full retail purchase for $99 —- Mac OS X has always been $129 hence the $129 “upgrade” price….. we all know we wont buy it anyway. 🙂

  5. Just be thankful they’re not instituting a registration key scheme à la Windows XP… Infinitely easier to, cough, share, cough, OSX v10.2 😉
