Is that an original Macintosh or a Palm Pilot? By the way, it runs the BeOS, which is the only interesting thing about it.

So I just bought a 19″ monitor. Brand new. On the box, it says ‘Compatible with desktop PC and Mac systems (Mac adapter not included).’ Okaaay…. When was the last time a Mac had a Mac-specific on-board monitor port? Like 1998? ’97? So I figure, well, NEC just doesn’t really know/care about the newer Macs. So today, I open the box and start checking out the ‘manual.’ In the manual, is a picture of what is obviously a G4 or Blue and White G3 tower, with the diagram of the VGA cable on the monitor plugging into a Mac-adapter, plugging into the monitor port on the back. Now, what? Even if it is a B&W G3, those came with PCI VGA cards built in, not Mac-specific ports. So not only is NEC wrong, but way wrong. Jesus.
I swear, if this whole ‘graphic design’ thing doesn’t work out for me, the least I can do is sell Apple products. Many has been the time, at many a store, that I have simply dismissed the salesperson, and have proceeded to fucking sell the shit out of the Apple product in question to the prospective buyer. And why do I bring this up? Today, at MicroCenter, I came across a semi-competent sales-lady trying to explain MacOS X to a Sun guy. She was showing him all the bells and whistles: the Dock, the genie effect, etc. But it was I who explained to him the 3 programming environments, and that Cocoa apps can be totally customized by the user. It was I who showed him how OS 9 can be run as a seperate thread in X, and that UNIX is right there when you need it. It’s amazing to see people’s reactions when you explain all that to them, especially Sun people (as this guy was) and Windows people. Their eyes just widen like they can’t believe what they’re hearing.
So, 808, what ever happened to that Mac store we were going to open? 😉 I guess I could wait until Apple opens their proposed Littleteon store and work weekends if I need to. Which, believe it or not, is something I’ve acutally considered doing when it happens. Maybe as the Genius Bar guy?
A review of an Apple store, via SVN:
The myth that a Mac can’t do what a PC can do is dashed to pieces and you start to realize that quite possibly, it is the other way around. I think destroying the PC/Mac myth is the most important factor in the success of the Apple Store. Profitable or not, setting the record straight is what will win new users. Analysts shouldn’t view the stores solely as a profit/loss balance sheet, but instead see it as a marketing program to change public perception.
You might not care but the Apple Cube has been end of lifed… thats according to Mac News Network.
I was thinking maybe they are merely planning an update with a few changes in the manfacturing methods.
…. grin 😐
I can’t even begin to describe my joy at the machine which will reach my doorstep in an estimated 6 days: Dual 533 G4 with nVIDIA Geforce 2. Nice.
For those interested in how MacOS X came about, check out this image of what is believed to be a 4 release of the NeXTStep OS. Notice a few things: 1) Mail.app 2)Terminal.app 3) Grab.app 4) Preview.app 5) Clock.app… Applications that haven’t even changed in name. Very interesting, and it makes me happy that this stuff didn’t fall by the wayside, like BeOS. Which makes me wonder… if NeXT hadn’t been puchased by Apple, 1) Would Apple still even be around, and would we be looking at 7500s like we look at these NeXT Stations? 2) If Be had been purchased, would NeXTStep still be around in one form or another?
My guesses would be ‘yes’ to the first question, and ‘no’ to the second.
– sniff – I just taught my 3-year old to say ‘Mac,’ and ‘Linux.’ It is an important day, indeed.
Damn, this is fucking scary… basically, a couple of hackers got within a machine or two of the computers that control the flow of electricity across the state of California.
Great, thats just great… Now we get to enjoy our random black outs along with hacked power supplies that surge and pules and … argh… whatever, fuck California.
Oh yeah, and fuck Gov. Gray Davis too…
A Mac-based Outlook virus has sprung up. So it’s still Microsoft-reliant, but instead of VBScript, it’s written in AppleScript. So don’t run crazy AppleScripts you get in an email. Or use Eudora or MailSmith. I’m pretty sure the Mac versions won’t open files automatically, so just don’t open a file if you get it in some email about The Simpsons. The ‘virus’ will attack both Outlook Express and Entourage, and no word yet if it works in the beta releases of Outlook:mac 2001. My guess is ‘yes.’
