Cure 182

I understand that both Blink 182 and The Cure are bands that make me a loser. I’m over it, you should be too.

Anyway, the latest Blink album, imaginatively titled “blink 182” includes a bizarre cameo. From Robert Smith:

Partially inspired by lifestyle changes–all three members became fathers recently–and side projects, this new untitled CD sports a spoken word piece, plus guest vocals by The Cure’s Robert Smith on “All of This.” “We don’t have any joke songs or anything like that on the record,” says bassist Hoppus. “On the other albums, we’d have 12 songs on them and two of them would be the joke songs.”

Does this seem just a little odd to anyone else? And I gotta say, the album is pretty good, for pop-punk. Is it Ned’s Atomic Dustbin? No. Is it over-produced? Yes. But the emotion is back, and the songs actually sound different from their other songs, unlike the last album which was basically a re-hashing of old riffs with new lyrics and slicker production.

Anyway, the Robert Smith cameo was one I was not expecting and it’s a relatively welcome clash of two worlds for me. Hits kinda closer to home in couple ways. I wonder if David Proulx is still hanging around them these days…

  1. Doesn’t seem too odd since The Cure has definitely been a musical influence to almost all kids during thier teen years. I think it’s cool that Blink was willing to shift away from their “safe” style, and experiment with a new approach – and in the process, incorporate someone that they might have been influenced by while growing up.

  2. i heard the song today. not bad. doesn’t suck monkey balls. they made the right decision and had it sound more cure than blink.

  3. I wish The Dead Milkmen and the Cure had gotten together…

  4. the song as well as the whole album rocks. It’s amazing, and robert is extremely talented. If you disagree, you know nothing ’bout good music.

  5. The song with Robert Smith, is defienately one of my new favorite songs… It is good to see Blink actually playing NEW music not the same old, same chords as last album…I can tell htis new album is going to be a good one!

  6. When I heard “All Of This” I was blown away and was speechless for about 10 minutes not knowing what I’d just heard was real or not. It’s the best thing Blink have done, in regards to musical direction. It shows that they are way more mature than anyone makes them out to be, and I hope this will be a thing of the future with them because it’s interesting to see how well they can gel with such a diverse musician as Robet Smith. Truely amazing.

  7. All i have to say is WHY? Why would RObert Smith team up with the poster boys of pop-punk to do a song? Dont get me wrong, the song is good but I wish that Smith would have done collaborated with other “more serious” musicians than blink 182 who make joke songs and sing about girls all the time.

  8. WELL I CANT BELIVE THAT ROBERT SMITH WOULD TEAM UP WITH BLINK 182 ITS MADNESS I CANT BELIVE IT THEIR NOT THE SAME AND THEY CAN EVER BE EVEN IF THEY TRIED i bet the only reason blink 182 is going to make money is because of robert I THINK HE WOULD DO GREAT WORK WITH BILLY CORGAN THATS ALL I HAVE TO SAY IF ENYBODY FEELS THE SAME WAY POST SOMETHING ON THIS WEBSITE NO OFFENCE TO THE OTHER BAND ITS JUST DIFFRENT

  9. woah. looks like we showed up on some AOL search or something.. Anyway, the song is actually pretty good, despite most people here thinking blink isn’t a serious band. they’re always had the humor thing, true, but check out ‘strings’ on cheshire cat. yes, it’s about a girl, but all pop-punk is about girls. hell, MTX even named an album ‘songs about girls’ i think.

  10. when i 1st heard of all of this i 1st thought…this isnt even blink 182…then i recognize travis’drums and the vocals of robert smith and tom delonge blew me away. who would of thought? jokester tom w/ mr serious robert.

  11. The record is great — went out and bought it… see mp3’s do encourage people to buy the cd.

  12. Excellent colaboration between Blink and Smith. Definitely shocked by it, but it turned out great. The album is just as good… listen to it a couple of times and you are hooked!! Well done again boys…. bravo!

  13. lily,
You overrate Robert, seen the latest HP commercial? Pictures of You? can you say sellout?

Anyway this song rocks and Smiths lyrics rock.

  14. I think that the song (and the entire album) rocks, all you guys above that dissed blink and their new album don’t know a thing about music. This is by far the best work they have done.

  15. I dont like Blink 182…
I do however love The Cure
All I have to say is that any exposure to a band I love is a good thing.
Whether that entails putting a classic song on a commercial, or Robert Smith featured on a Blink 182 song.
Either way, If people are led into listening to good music is a good thing, and people who think that means “selling out” need to go listen to some crap music no one is ever gonna care about.

  16. Where can I download/listen to this song? I’ve looked around with no success.

  17. the cure has no control over a song of theirs is used in a commercial. I think I read that the record company has control of the back catalogue for a few years

  18. HAHA!! A bear attack!!! November 25, 2003 at 5:41 am

I used to be obsessed with blink 182. I got older and discovered the Cure. Now, this collaboration has strangely and unexpectedly brought me back, but the trip wasn’t far. Despite what many say, blink always had a degree of depth and certainly talent. I’m glad that Robert Smith recognized this and illuminated many out there to that fact.
And yes, the Dead Milkmen and the Cure should definitely have teamed up.

  19. I think it’s about time that musicians are finally paying homage to Robert and the Cure. He has always stayed true to his own vision, and are one of the best live acts I have seen. I, too, am not a blink fan, but I give them props for the colaberation. Great song, Fat Bob is an icon.

  20. It’s about time that the newer bands of today Show Robert Smith some respect for all he has done for the world of music

  21. In response to Big Rob, wo said ‘“more serious” musicians than blink 182 who make joke songs and sing about girls all the time

…as opposed to The Cure, who have never written hundreds of songs about girls… ever… right?

  22. In my mind the best blink song in a long while, this is the best album for the band in while as well, the last too were pretty bad, its a bit box car racer but thats not a bad thing> Maybe they should get rid of mark now cos tom is clearly the the most talented, which is quite a role reversal. All of this is truely amazing by blink standards!!

  23. Also, is it just me or is travis an AMAZING drummer now? one of the best i have seen in a long time, so much energy, thts why they were so good live a couple of months a go

  24. although him doin nearly all the percussion on the new pink album is a bit sad

  25. I’m listening to it now. What a shocking and pleasant suprise. Who’da thunk?

The cure’s new album is going to be on Ross Robinson’s (limp biskit and korn producer) new label “i am” and will be produced by Robinson. According to the band, it’ll be the darkest thing they’ve ever done, inspired by the trilogy show in berlin. All of this is very strange, but I’m looking forward to it.

  26. Fat Bob is a genuis

  27. i love blink 182 they rule i have all there albums go blink goo all u non blink fans u suck!!!!!!!!!!@@@@@@@@@@*****************************

  28. ryan rocks remmember June 6, 2004 at 1:49 pm

  29. the cure is going on tour with bands like blink 182 this summer (thursday, the muse, cursive, ect.) It’s no big supreise that they clashed together. Both blink and the cure have their own little style of music and have both had retarded sucky bands like good charolite and simple plan try to copy their style. Im a HUGE blink fan and have been for about 10 years. oh and if blink is sooo worthless then why would they have been around for 12 years? answer THAT fat rob

  30. blink 182 self titled cd blew me away the first time i heard it…..i recomend everyone smoke a joint or two then listen to this cd because its a work of art. Not only do you hear sounds simular to the cure in this cd but you can hear the influence of other great bands like the police and pink floyd. All the songs connect on this cd too. How are shitty bands like gc and sp gonna copy blink now???great work guys

    ROBERT IS A GOD!!!

  31. shaun: listen to tiltwheel. if you look in the thanks on cheshire cat, you’ll see a thanks to dave and tiltwheel, as blink used tiltwheel’s instruments on that album. tiltwheel defined that san diego punk sound, and now they can’t even afford to tour. blink took the style, made it digestible for 14-year-olds and have made fucking millions, while dave has to whine to me about how hard it is to tour on unemployment checks. really sad.

  32. I think that blink 182 rocks so for all you people that think they suck go f*** yourselves! As for the song All of This i thought that it was great! I love the cure and blink 182 and when they made a song together it was really good and i thought that mark was singing that part the whole time.

  33. well, i think this song performed by blink is just more than great, the lyric is really deep, hard to understand at first, but when you got it, you just cant get it out of your head. the group, made his part, adding a punk touch in the song, that makes it great, its a good one in the mtv icon, afi also made a good performance, i recommend that song, just like heaven listen it, you will love it like this song… blink rules, and if you dont think that, suck my dick man…

  34. Ok to the guy Kev who said liking the CURE makes u a loser, tha is your fault. U thinking that makes u a loser and not a true cure fan. Im am a diee hard. I will punch u in your mouth if you talk about RObert. Thats my honey! But this song does rock out…also i liek the other song on the blink album, its just music, kinda sounds liek something by the GorillaZ

  35. Big rob…. If you dont like blink 182 then why are you even wasting your time talking about them. What bands dont sing about girls in their songs is a better question. For all i care you can just get out of my life and shut up!

  36. hay, it’s finally a good Blink 182 song because it has Rob in it! Nah they’re not that bad…but this song rocks!
